Lefevre d'Étaples, Jacques
- Lefevre d'Étaples, Jacques
(ca. 1450-1537)
humanist, theologian
Known also by his Latin names of Fabri, or Faber Stapulensis, Jacques Lefevre d'Étaples was born in Étaples, Picardy, and taught philosophy at Paris. Named vicar to the bishop of Meaux, he created in that city a group who worked on clerical reform and the vulgarization of the Scripture. This "Cenacle of Meaux" was, however, dispersed because of its sympathies for the ideas of Martin Luther. Lefevre d'Étaples sought refuge for a time in Strasbourg, before being called by King francis i to be tutor to his children. He then retired to Nérac (1530), near marguerite de navarre. Lefevre d'É-taples did one of the first translations of the Bible, as well as of the works of Aristotle, and is the author of Commentaires sur les épîtres de saint Paul, and Commentaires sur les quatre Évangiles.
